Axle Rebuilds or Repairs: Our Process

Axle damage will be assessed after we receive your axle. Axles that are not too damaged may be repaired. In the event of extensive damage, the axle needs to be rebuilt. A process like this will require replacing more parts and requiring more labor to repair, so it will cost more than repairing an axle. Nonetheless, both processes follow some similar steps.

Firstly, all the axle components must be removed and cleaned. After they have been cleaned, we inspect them for damage and determine what needs to be repaired or replaced. Our lathe will then be used to restore the axle back to factory specifications. Once the damaged spindle ends are removed, they will be replaced with our custom-built spindle ends. In the final step, the axle is painted, assembled and then filled with fluids.

During the axle rebuild, we will replace the ring and pinion first. It will be an OEM replacement that is known for its high quality. Next, we will replace the seals on the axle carriers with Timken replacements. Our technicians will then replace the damaged axle shaft with a refurbished one. In some cases, a new axle shaft will be required. The rotor is then examined if it is bolted behind the hub. If it is, then we will rotate or replace the rotor so that a brake pad may be applied properly.

If your axle is damaged, what symptoms might you experience?

Damage to your axle could be caused by a number of different things. The car may have hit the curb too hard, or the car may have travelled over a rough gravel road with too much weight inside. If an axle is damaged, it may present one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Noise – An axle with a dent or a bend can cause the gears on the axle to become out of alignment. You will notice a grinding sound as the gears turn together.
  • Vibrations – If the axle is damaged, a vibration or also shaking will be felt as you drive. The vibration can be felt while turning the steering wheel as well.
  • Leaks – A damaged axle can cause dents and cracks that lead to leaks. As a result, the lubricant may leak from the axle, causing the axle to not be properly lubricated.
