What do we do in our Axle Rebuilds and Repairs?

Your axle will first be checked by our professionals to assess the damage. The amount of damage to the axle will determine if we need to repair or rebuild the axle. If the axle needs to be rebuilt, then more things will need to be replaced and it is a more complicated process. This means that repairing an axle will be a cheaper process that has fewer components replaced. Both processes share some steps

The first shared step is to remove the components from the axle to clean and then inspect them. Depending on how damaged those parts are, we will either repair or replace them. Following that, we will use our lathe to shape the axle back to factory specifications. For the spindle ends, if they are damaged, we will remove them. After that, we will replace those spindle ends with our manufactured in-house spindle ends. Then, the axle is painted, assembled and filled with fluids.

Axle rebuilds will begin with checking the ring and pinion and replacing it. We use a high-quality OEM replacement ring and pinion provided by an OEM supplier we trust. Following that, we will inspect the axle carrier and replace the seals on the carrier. The seals we use are also from Timken. For the axle shaft, we will replace the axle shaft with a refurbished one. This axle shaft has been refurbished by our professionals and inspected to make sure it has been restored to factory specifications. If needed we will replace the axle shaft with a new axle shaft. Then, if the rotors on the axle are bolted behind the hub, they will be rotated or replaced to make sure brakes and brake pads can be installed properly.

What you may sense if you have a damaged axle

If you are starting to feel something strange when driving your vehicle, your axle may have become damaged. This damage could have happened from any number of sources other than a collision. Maybe you drove over a large pothole, or accidentally hit a curb too hard. Whatever may have happened, there is a good chance you will feel one or many of the following symptoms. If you encounter any of these symptoms, bring your vehicle to your mechanic and have it inspected.

  • Leaks – A damaged axle can cause dents and cracks that lead to leaks. As a result, the lubricant may leak from the axle, causing the axle to not be properly lubricated.
  • Vibrations – Axle damage causes your vehicle to vibrate, which you will feel as you drive. The vibration will be more intense while turning the steering wheel as well.
  • Noise – As the gears come out of alignment as the result of a dent or bend in the axle, you will hear a grinding noise.
