Why repair your axle instead of purchasing a new axle?

Houston Rebuilt Axles are axle experts who can save customers money by repairing existing axle assembly in their vehicles, instead of having them purchase a completely new axle.  

In a repaired axle assembly (A.K.A. Fluff & Buff treatment), the team at HRA tears the axle down to a bare housing.  The ring and pinion, bearing set, axle shafts, and rotors are then removed. If it needs to be straightened, we place the axle on a lathe and form it back into factory specifications.  We then clean the housing, reassemble the axle, fill the newly repaired axle with fluid, and then transport the axle back for quick and easy installation.

In the rebuilt axle assembly process, the axle undergoes a similar process to the fluff & buff axle treatment. In this process, the old ring and pinion is replaced with an OEM set whenever possible.  Timken bearings and seals are then used for both carriers and axle shafts. It’s important to note that rebuilt rear axles will contain used axle shafts, unless the team assesses that the previous axle shaft is no longer able to operate or be salvaged. In these cases we would then provide a new axle shaft. During the rebuild process, each shaft is inspected to make sure it works like new. Once the axle rebuild is in it’s newly working condition, the axle is then painted, filled with fluid, and shipped back for easy installation.  

What are differentials?

It is common for vehicle owners to ask us “what are differentials”?

Simply put, the differential can be found in your central axle housing. This is what the drive shaft actually attaches directly to it in order to perform. A differential has three core functions to operate, these are: redirect power to the drive wheels, use gear reduction to multiply engine power delivered to the wheels, and help the vehicle to make turns efficiently.
