After Portland, Salem is the second-largest city in the state of Oregon. The population is 175,535 as of the 2020 census. This makes it the 152nd-largest city in the country. The original name of the area was called Chemeketa. This name came from the original Native Americans of the area which called it Chim-i-ki-ti. But the area became known as the Mill because of its proximity to Mill Creek. It is not known exactly why the name changed to Salem, there are some theories to the anglicized version of Shalom, or named after Jerusalem or simply named after Salem, Massachusetts. Agriculture has always been an important part of the city, and one of the nicknames of the city is Cherry City.
