What does an axle repair involve?
If your axle is not majorly damaged, repairing an axle is a good and cheaper option than rebuilding an axle. The main difference between the two methods is how much is involved and the cost of components. The first step in repairing an axle is stripping the components off the axle. This means we remove the rotors, ring gears, bearing set and also the axle shafts. We also keep the pinion shaft and bearing installed. If required, we will then put the axle on our lathe to straighten it. We then clean the housing and inspect the bearings. Following that, if any spindle ends are damaged we will remove them. We will then install our built in-house replacement spindle ends in their place. Then, we reassemble, paint, and fill the axle with fluids. The axle is now ready to be installed.
How are our rebuilt axle assemblies done?
The initial step to rebuilding an axle is similar to repairing an axle. That first step involves tearing down the axle and cleaning it thoroughly. The ring and pinion are then replaced with a high-quality OEM. Then the bearings are replaced. We at HRA trust Timken for the replacement bearings and seals for our axle rebuilds. They are the benchmark in the bearing industry and are known for their tight tolerances.
We use Timken to replace the seals on the axle shafts and carriers. Then we replace all used seals. For rear axles that are being rebuilt, we use meticulously inspected refurbished axle shafts. New axle shafts will also be used if necessary. If that rear axle has the rotors bolted on behind the hub, then we will turn or replace it. This ensures that new pads are also able to be installed properly. Then the axle is, like in the repairing process, we assemble, paint and also fill fluids in the axle.
