Rebuilt and Remanufactured differentials
Over the lifetime of a vehicle, the differential will wear down and will need to be repaired. We can do this by either rebuilding or remanufacturing the differential. A rebuild differential will rebuild the damaged differential by cleaning, inspecting, repairing the components and replacing parts only as needed. A remanufactured will be trying to restore the differential back to new as much as possible by replacing more components than in rebuilding. All of the components that could be worn are replaced and other parts are replaced as needed. We can also modify differentials for any number of purposes. For example, if you want to go off-roading we can modify your differential for that purpose.
What do we do in our Axle Repairs and Rebuilds?
The first step to either repairing or rebuilding an axle is to see how damaged it is. This assessment allows us to then choose to rebuild or repair the axle. If the axle is severely damaged then it will need to be rebuilt. The rebuilding process is much more involved and more parts are replaced. Because of this, repairing an axle is cheaper than rebuilding it. There are some processes shared by both methods.
To properly assess the damage, we remove all of the components on the axle and thoroughly clean it. This also allows us to look at the components we took of and assess their damage. We will either replace or repair those components as needed. Then we will use our lathe to shape the axle back to factory specifications. We will then look at the spindle ends on the axle. For the damaged ones, we will cut them off and replace them with spindle ends we have manufactured in-house. The axle is then painted and assembled. After that, we fill the axle with fluids and now the axle is ready to be installed.
For the axle rebuild process, we examine and then replace the ring and pinion with a high-quality OEM replacement. The axle carrier then has the seals replaced with replacements from Timken. Following that, the axle shaft is replaced with a refurbished in-house axle shaft. We may use a new axle shaft if needed. Then, if the rotors are bolted behind the hub, the rotors will be replaced or rotated to make sure proper brake and pad installation.
How can you feel if you have a damaged axle?
If you start noticing sounds or leaks from your car, your axle may have become damaged. This damage could have happened from any number of sources other than a collision. Maybe you drove over a large pothole, or accidentally hit a curb too hard. Whatever may have happened, there is a good chance you will feel one or many of the following symptoms. If you encounter any of these symptoms, bring your vehicle to your mechanic and have it inspected.
- Noise – The noise from axle damage often comes from gears no longer lining up together. This causes the gears to grind against each other causing a sound while you drive. The axle just needs to get a dent or a bend for this to happen.
- Leaks – You may see fluids leaking from the axle. This is caused by a crack or a dent in an axle. This is a cause for concern because the axle may no longer be properly lubricated.
- Vibrations – A strong vibration will be felt when driving your vehicle from the axle damage. The feeling can also feel more intense as you turn the steering wheel, also.
