Our Axle Repair and Rebuild Process
The first step in our axle repair process is to determine how damaged the axle is. This can cause the axle to either be repaired or rebuilt depending on the extent of the damage. If the axle is able to be repaired, then it will be a cheaper option. Rebuilding the axle is more expensive as more components on the axle will need to be replaced and more things will need to be repaired. Both processes have similar steps.
We first begin by removing the components from the axle and cleaning them. The axle is then put onto the lathe. allowing us to restore the axle back to factory specifications. Then, after inspecting the components, bearings and seals we will repair or replace them. We have spindle ends that were rebuilt in-house which we will use to replace any damaged spindle ends. Following that, the axle is then painted, assembled, and filled with fluids.
The first step specific to the axle rebuild process is replacing the ring and pinion on the axle with a high-quality OEM replacement set. For the axle carriers on the axle, we will inspect and also replace seals on the axle with Timken replacements. Then, we replace the damaged axle shafts with a refurbished axle shaft. This refurbished axle shaft has also been thoroughly inspected and restored back to factory specifications. We may also use a new axle shaft if it is necessary. If there is a rotor on the rear end and it is bolted behind the hub, then the rotor is turned or replaced to make sure a brake pad is applied properly.
What are the signs you have a damaged axle?
Damage to an axle can come from a myriad of sources. The damage could have come from hitting a curb to going over a large pothole. Should the axle get damaged, the axle may show one or more of these signs:
- Noise – A bent axle can cause the gears on the axle to become out of alignment. You will notice a grinding sound when they turn together.
- Vibrations – If your axle is damaged, your car will shake and vibrate as you drive. The vibration can be felt while turning the steering wheel as well.
- Leaks – Damage to an axle can cause cracks that lead to leaks. As a result, the lubricant may leak from the axle, causing the axle to become lubricated insufficiently.
